Having enjoyed working with the AIggy Poptons on Skull Ring Pop reformed The Stooges with bassist Mike Watt (formerly of the Minutemen) filling in for Dave Alexander and Fun House saxophonist Steve Mackay rejoining the lineup. Pop was unable to control his drug use and checked himself into a mental institution UCLA’s neuropsychiatric institute to try to clean up. It remains Pop's solitary brush with major commercial success.
Though widely known as an innovator and "godfather" of punk rock Pop's music has encompassed a number of styles over the years including pop hard rock jazz and blues. In 2010 The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
