After the defeat of the Republic in 1939 Samaranch studied commerce at IESE Business School in Barcelona. In the aftermath of a bribery scandal surrounding the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Utah an inquiry held in camera expelled several IOC members but cleared Samaranch of wrongdoing.
