He has written several one-act plays including 'Riverside Drive' and 'Old Saybrook' which both explore well-known Allen themes. His family was Ashkenazi Jewish; his grandparents were immigrants from Russia and Austria who spoke Yiddish Hebrew and German. In 1972 he wrote and starred in the film version of Play It Again Sam which was directed by Herbert Ross and co-starred Diane Keaton.
